1.1 The what, why, and how of linguistics

This is the first lecture for PLIN0048. We define the subject matter that linguistics is concerned with and delineate the boundaries of the field in terms of the types of questions linguists ask, the motivations behind them, and the methodology used to answer them. We introduce the notions of a speaker/hearer's mental knowledge of language as the central object of linguistic inquiry, discuss the relationship of linguistics with other disciplines and the impact linguistic insight can have, and briefly explore a small part of the range of abstract methods employed in answering and reasoning about linguistic questions.
